Who was Jim Rohn?

Jim Rohn was one of the most influential business philosophers and motivational speakers of the last 40 years. He influenced thousands of people all over the globe with his business philosophy and seminars, including me. I wrote this article as a tribute to Jim Rohn, a great human being.

His influence touched the lives and propelled the careers of other great leaders in the personal development industry like Tony Robbins, Mark Victor Hanson, Brian Tracy and Jack Canfield, to name only a few.

He certainly had a positive impact on me at a time in my life when I was first forming the philosophies that guide me today”.

Character and principles

One of the profound characteristics of this man was his sincerity, his realness and his integrity. In person, one-on-one, he was as humble and down-to-earth as he was in front of an audience of thousands. He did not believe in shortcuts, just in identifying your dreams and going after them by daily disciplined action. For Jim, success was the natural result of daily disciplined effort : “Success is the natural consequence of consistently applying the basic fundamentals”.

Jim stuck with the fundamentals and principles. Nothing he taught was new. This modest and unassuming man communicated such an extraordinarily powerful message in simple and straightforward language. He painted with words and his powerful quotes remain signposts for many of his talent to inspire others. One of my favorite Jim Rohn quotes; “Failure is simply a few errors in judgment, repeated every day”, reminds me that we can all change the course of our lives today by evaluating and fixing the errors in our mindset.

Sadly Jim Rohn passed away on 5 December 2009 after an 18 month battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis. Jim’s legacy will live forever. Jim challenged every soul he met to be the best you can be in terms of health, wealth and happiness and to use your faith to dream about and achieve worthy rewards. He set a tough act by leading in example.

The beginning of a success journey

Jim had humble beginnings as an Idaho farming boy. At the age of 25 he was a typical middle class American family man in a personal crisis. He could not pay his debt and he had a family to support. Jim met John Earl Shoaff at that time, who became his personal mentor and challenged him to change his philosophy and life plan. Jim joined Mr. Shoaff’s organization and started his journey in personal development. By the age of 31 the application of this new philosophy turned him into a millionaire.

Jim then continued to share his philosophy and personal development journey with people all over the world in the form of seminars, recorded weekend seminars, books, audio cassettes and DVD’s. He traveled extensively in his lifetime to address over 6000 audiences (4 million people worldwide) in the USA, Canada, Europe, Asia, Australia and Africa. He touched many more by the ripple effect of those hearing his voice and expanded their imagination of what is possible for them.

His business success started here

Jim achieved his initial success through joining a MLM company part time. He was working his job during the day and at night he worked his MLM business. During those early years Jim build his business the hard way. Today’s marketing technology was still in the minds of their inventors. He had meetings, invited people to the meetings, was creative to find prospects in warm and cold markets. He worked hard and he did everything required in what we will call “old school marketing strategies”. Jim persisted and through his disciplined effort achieved great success.
